Look at the flowers, the earth’s faithful:

we lend them Fate from Fate’s very edge.

But who knows? If they regret their fading,

it is up to us to be their regret.

All has a will to change. But we are heavy,

and lay our selves all around, enjoying our weight.

What exhausting teachers for things we make,

while they are blessed with childhood for ever.

If one could take them into his deepest sleep,

sleep deeply with things, how lightly he’d step,

another into another day, out of the communal deep.

Or perhaps he’d stay, and they’d blossom for him,

praise him, their convert, now like one of them,

all the still children out in the fields and the wind.
